Encephalitis

World Encephalitis Day, held on February 22 each year is the global awareness day for people who have been directly or indirectly affected by encephalitis.

Although quite rare in the UK, it affects approximately 4000 people each year. It is a viral infection which causes inflammation in the brain causing potential life threatening conditions. There is no age limit, however, the very young and elderly are most at risk. Symptoms mimic a flu like feeling with high temperature and a headache. Other symptoms include fits and seizures and a general sense of confusion and feeling of lethargy. In cases such as these, it is important to get medical help as soon as possible. Causes can vary from common viral infections including the herpes simplex virus to immune system irregularities. A more prevalent cause is the Japanese encephalitis caused by mosquitoes and those from Ticks. It is not contagious.
